PUBLIC SERVANT

A COMMITTED PUBLIC SERVANT

Sam is passionate about his community and has a long history of public service to Prince George’s County. He knows that service is the rent we pay for our time here on earth.

He has pushed for more and better schools, having had significant impact in the building of three schools: Lake Arbor Elementary, Ernest Everett Just Middle, and Charles H. Flowers High School, and two community centers, the Largo/Kettering/Perrywood and Lake Arbor. Sam has improved county college opportunities and, most recently sponsored a four-session education programs for the 24 school in his District, District 6 Stakeholders Unite for Education: Understanding Gender Differences in Learning, with featured guest speaker for the first session, the renowned educator and author, Dr. Jawanza Kunjufu. Acting on his concern about the impact of High School Assessment Exams he proposed and had enacted legislation to establish a Blue Ribbon Committee to address this concern and make recommendations to the Maryland State Board of Education. The Council selected him as chair.

Sam established the national award-winning Community Leadership Institute, a Center of Excellence to empower community stakeholders. Because he has been both a civic and a homeowners’ association president, he knows the value and impact of citizen participation.

He led a bi-county effort to convert the Marlboro Meadows 20+ year old costly water system to the less expensive WSSC water system. This conversion fulfilled a campaign promise.
